A suicide car bomber attacked a convoy of vehicles near a US military base in Kabul on Friday, wounding nine foreign soldiers as well as a number of civilian contractors and Afghan passers-by.

Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack, which underscored the deteriorating security situation in Kabul at a time of increasingly public disputes within the US administration over strategy in Afghanistan.
