FDA warns on cholesterol drug

US medicine regulators on Friday tried to calm the controversy over Vytorin, Schering-Plough and Merck’s key drug, urging the public not to dismiss the health importance of lowering cholesterol.

The Food and Drug Administration said it would review data from the drugmakers’ failed Vytorin study because of its “unexpected” result showing that it cut cholesterol but did not reduce arterial plaque.
