Vodafone is seeking control of Vodacom, South Africa’s largest mobile phone operator, by making an informal offer of $2.5bn for 12.5 per cent of the company.

Vodafone’s stake in Vodacom would increase from 50 per cent to 62.5 per cent if the deal is finalised, and the world’s largest mobile operator by revenue would use the South African company as a hub to expand further into Africa.
