US food stamp aid at record high

The number of US citizens on food stamps jumped in January to a record 32.2m, up 400,000 from December, the US government said yesterday, in a sign that rising unemployment and persistently high food prices are hurting consumers, writes Javier Blas in London.

The programme is the US's biggest domestic anti-hunger scheme, providing about $112 a month per recipient or about $250 per household to buy food.
