Obama admits differences with Baghdad

Barack Obama, US president, on Wednesday admitted strategic differences between Washington and Baghdad in the wake of US forces’ withdrawal from Iraqi cities last month. However, he insisted that the country’s efforts to take control of its own security remained on course.

Appearing at a news conference with Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq’s prime minister, who is visiting Washington, Mr Obama acknowledged strains between the US and Mr Maliki’s now more assertive government.
