Nthato Motlana had what are known in South Africa as “struggle credentials”. A leading political activist in the fight against apartheid, he was the doctor who brought healthcare to thousands in the impoverished black township of Soweto as well as being the physician to Nelson Mandela. Years later, as a businessman, he played an important role in the drive to give black people economic power. The former president once remarked: “If I want to get hold of my doctor now I have to go through the stock exchange.”
