Tighter belts constrict executive pay

It is that time of year when companies and remuneration consultants lay out their pay plans for executives to their big investors.

The stakes have never been higher for boards needing their top executives to lead them through the downturn. As the effects of the banking crisis ripple through the UK economy, the mere mention of executive bonuses is enough to spark fury. But pay for most executives of listed companies is falling fast.
