Beijing’s Africa envoy to focus on Darfur

China has named a senior diplomat as its first ever special envoy to Africa, with a brief to focus on the crisis in Darfur, in a sign of Beijing’s mounting concern about a global backlash against its close ties to the Sudan regime.

The appointment of Liu Guijin, who has served as ambassador in South Africa and Zimbabwe during 15 years on the continent, was announced by the foreign ministry.
