Almost 80 Muslim Thai protesters died of suffocation on army trucks that were taking them to detention after violent clashes, officials said on Tuesday.

Manit Sutaporn, a justice ministry official, said 78 people died of suffocation during the five-hour journey to barracks in Pattani making it the bloodiest day in the region since April 28, when troops and police shot dead 106 machete-wielding militants.
