UN calls on rich nations to lower asylum barriers

The United Nations refugee agency on Tuesday said the continuing sharp fall in applications for asylum meant governments should not raise more barriers to those escaping conflict or persecution.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that applications for asylum in industrialised countries last year fell for the third consecutive year to their lowest level for 16 years.
