Subprime crisis seals O’Neal’s fate at Merrill

A business with fewer than 100 employees appears to have sealed the fate of Stan O’Neal after one of the most extraordinary Wall Street careers in living memory.

Mr O’Neal, who went from a childhood in segregated rural Alabama to become the first African-American head of a Wall Street bank, was on Sunday poised to step down as chief executive of Merrill Lynch.
