Brown faces nervous wait for the crown

Labour's annual conference began against a backdrop of acute animosity between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown but ends with a healing of the wounds in their famously fractious relationship.

In his keynote speech to the conference on Monday, the chancellor lavished praise on the prime minister. Mr Blair - without going so far as to propose Mr Brown as his successor - returned the compliment. Still, the truce between the two remains uneasy and may yet collapse altogether.
