Poland in EU battle on death penalty

Poland rejected on Tuesday a proposal by European Union member states to declare October 10 an annual “European day against the death penalty”, in the latest sign of friction between Warsaw and its European partners.

At a meeting of EU interior and justice ministers, Warsaw stuck to its position that the bloc should celebrate “the protection of life” – a shift of emphasis that liberal member states fear would imply a condemnation of legalised abortion and euthanasia.
