Financial crunch weakens bidding at Christie's auction

Christie's auction house sold $146m worth of Asian works of art in its Hong Kong autumn sales, failing to meet its pre-sale estimate as the financial crisis stifled demand from collectors and investors.

The five-day sale, which ended yesterday, was about 35 per cent short of its pre-sale estimate of $224m (€193m, £152m). A third of the 2,500 lots remained unsold.
