Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, on Monday night extended a visit to the Middle East in a dramatic diplomatic push to secure Israeli and Palestinian agreement on opening Gaza’s access to the outside world.

The announcement came after she told a news conference in Ramallah on Monday that there was an “agreement in sight”. She was speaking after holding separate talks with Ariel Sharon, Israeli prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Authority president.
