Peru's Humala poised to take early election lead

Ollanta Humala, a radical nationalist whose rhetoric has unsettled international mining and energy companies, was yesterday poised to win the first round of Peru's presidential elections, despite recent falls in his poll ratings.

According to surveys released at the weekend, Mr Humala's support had dropped by up to 4 percentage points but he retained a significant lead over his nearest rivals.
