Burma acts on freedom calls

Burma’s military rulers have taken some steps towards meeting international demands for greater political freedom but reports of human rights abuses continue to raise serious concerns, Ibrahim Gambari, the United Nations’ special envoy, said on Tuesday.

Mr Gambari was addressing the Security Council after his second visit to Burma since thousands of dissidents, including Buddhist monks, were rounded up in a government crackdown in September.
