Burma casualties as troops open fire

Burma’s crackdown on the biggest protests against military rule in 20 years produced its first casualties on Wednesday after police fired warning shots and tear gas and arrested up to 200 monks.

One person was killed and five wounded, a hospital source told Reuters, adding that all six people had gunshot wounds. Gordon Brown, UK prime minister, called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to discuss the crisis and urged the world body to send an envoy to Burma.
