Shia leader imbued with rebels' spirit

Demands for “a Jaafari ruler” have long been expressed in Shia protest chants, notably during the short-lived southern uprising against Saddam Hussein's rule in 1991.

After a decade of repression, ending with the US-led ousting of Mr Hussein's regime, many might have recalled the rebel dream yesterday when Ibrahim al-Jaafari was chosen as the Shia candidate for prime minister.
