Over the years I have asked countless US politicians and officials to explain the foreign policy rationale behind the US blockade against Cuba. Once in a while they have muttered about standing firm against oppression in one of the world’s last communist redoubts. More often, the response has been a knowing shrug: forget the geopolitics and look instead to the Cuban-American vote in Florida.
