House votes to block war funds

The House of Representatives yesterday blocked funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, setting up a battle with the Senate that will probably restore money for the conflicts.

In a surprise move, the House voted 149-141 to reject the $162bn funding bill for 2009. The result came after 132 Republicans abstained to protest at tactics used by the Democratic leadership to bring the measure to a vote.
