Only four in 10 courses at Britain’s top tier of universities will accept students taking diplomas, the government’s flagship new qualification for teenagers.

The gulf between the 40 per cent figure for Russell Group universities and about 80 per cent for higher education as a whole suggests diplomas have failed so far to entrench themselves as an ideal qualification for the brightest pupils.
