Revenue seeks powers for surprise visits

Tax inspectors could turn up unannounced on taxpayers' doorsteps demanding to comb through records under powers planned as part of the ongoing merging of Revenue and Customs.

Though Customs officials have strong search rights already, tax inspectors need official warrants to make surprise visits. The Revenue is seeking to develop a single system to, in effect, amalgamate the two sets of powers.
