European leaders have made little secret throughout the year of their strong support for the election of Barack Obama as the next US president.

But with Mr Obama’s victory some European governments are starting to wake up to an uncomfortable fact about the president-elect: He may be in a much stronger position than George W. Bush has been in recent times to persuade European governments to make commitments to the international effort in Afghanistan.
