China firm against N Korea sanctions

China warned yesterday against the use of heavy-handed sanctions against North Korea to force Pyongyang to return to the six-party talks about its nuclear weapons programme.

The comments, delivered at a regular Beijing foreign ministry briefing yesterday, amount to a public repudiation of calls from Washington to ratchet up the pressure on Pyongyang.
