Teachers attack plan to restart 1960s phonetics system for reading

Teachers yesterday attacked a government U-turn on literacy policy that will lead to young children being taught how to read through a technique that was phased out in the 1960s.

Ruth Kelly, education secretary, announced the end of the mixture of methods for teaching reading that have been central to the national literacy strategy for the past seven years.
