Brighter outlook for Canada's ABCP

The odds on a successful restructuring of Canada's frozen non-bank asset-backed commercial paper market improved yesterday with Canaccord Capital, a Vancouver securities firm, offering to buy back paper held by more than 1,400 retail investors at par.

A committee of large holders of Canadian ABCP has proposed that the paper be converted into longer-term floating-rate notes, with the goal of containing losses and creating a secondary market.
