New flu strain threatens Mexico and US

Mexico declared a formal state of alert and the US declared a public health emergency as an outbreak of a new strain of influenza continued to spread in the two countries.

Mexico’s state of alert, in effect for the capital and surrounding areas, was called late on Saturday, as authorities cancelled public events, including ministerial speaking engagements, large-scale meetings and rock concerts in the city. The country’s death toll from the flu rose to up to 81.
