Brown under pressure on public services

Union leaders have stepped up the pressure on Gordon Brown to call a pause in public sector reforms when he takes over as prime minister this summer.

Public sector unions are threatening to co-ordinate a series of national strikes involving millions of civil servants, postal workers, council staff, teachers and health workers in a series of disputes over below-inflation pay rises, job cuts and privatisation of services.
