Now here is a first. The chancellor performed his great annual ritual yesterday – and all anyone wanted to talk about afterwards in Westminster was David Cameron.

Even Gordon Brown seemed rather bored by his 10th Budget. But the fifth leader of the opposition in Labour’s nine years, now, that was a different matter. Everyone was asking the same thing: “Whaddya think of THAT?”
