A fledgling return for risk

A global recession and a traumatised financial sector provide the backdrop for markets and investors as they start 2009.

Last year was the worst for stocks, credit and emerging markets since the Great Depression. The big question for this year is whether aggressive central bank action led by the US Federal Reserve and the fiscal stimuli planned by many governments can arrest the slump.
