Humber tidal power to proceed

A new tidal power scheme to be built in the Humber estuary was given the go-ahead yesterday. The prototype generator, which will harness the energy of incoming and outgoing tides to generate electricity, will receive £878,000 in backing from the government.

John Hutton, energy secretary, said yesterday: "Our continued support for these emerging technologies is essential if the UK is to cement its position as a world leader in marine energy."
