Record high for European emissions trade

The cost of buying allowances to pollute in Europe reached a record high on Monday on fears that industry in the UK and continental Europe may exceed emissions targets over the next three years.

The European Union emissions trading scheme sets limits for companies' carbon emissions. Companies which pump out less than the limit are rewarded by being able to sell the difference to companies which are polluting more than the limit.
