Indonesia appeals for aid as tsunami death toll mounts

Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appealed for international humanitarian aid as the country’s Aceh province emerged as one of the worst hit in Sunday’s Indian Ocean earthquake.

Fear had been mounting that the death toll from the worst earthquake in forty years would rise sharply as Indonesian authorities failed to make contact with the coastal towns closest to the epicentre of the quake.
