Fears grow for Kenyan economy

Kenya’s economy was in danger of shrinking this year, a leading business group said yesterday, as the US’s top Africa envoy called escalating violence in the country “ethnic cleansing”.

Steven Smith, chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, said that if unrest continued for another month, east Africa’s biggest economy could shrink by up to 3 per cent.
