Jacques Chirac likes to get his way. So when the French president failed to get his man as president of the European Commission last year, it was only a matter of time before he got his own back.

Mr Chirac is currently pursuing a high-profile, high-risk, feud with José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, which could have serious ramifications for both men, and the future of the European Union.
