McCain's dilemma over running mate

Vice-presidential candidates have rarely made much difference to the outcome of US elections. But John McCain's choice of running mate could be an exception.

The Arizona senator, who hoped to secure the Republican nomination in the latest round of primary contests yesterday, will be 72 years old on inauguration day next January. If elected, he would be the oldest first-term US president in history - three years older than Ronald Reagan when he took office.
