A question for the wealthy

Many large financial institutions have in recent years sought to exploit the links between their private banking and investment banking arms. The idea was that a new generation of wealthy clients - entrepreneurs who had built their fortunes in business - wanted sophisticated products and access to expertise in corporate finance and investment banking.

It was a win-win situation - until the big writedowns at the investment banks showed this structure could expose private banks to significant reputational risk.
