Draft election policy threatens opposition unity

Discontent broke out on Wednesday in the ranks of Italy’s centre-left opposition, in a threat to the unity that experts view as a precondition of a leftist victory in April’s national election.

Senior politicians in Communist Refoundation, a hardline communist party, denounced a draft election programme prepared by moderate strategists close to Romano Prodi, who will challenge Silvio Berlusconi for the premiership.
