A widely expected break up of Cable & Wireless, the UK telecommunications group, is most likely to take the shape of a classic demerger.

Analysts said on Thursday that, although it could not be ruled out that part or all of the group could be bought in the coming months, the most probable format for the expected break up was a demerger that would take effect next year. C&W declined to comment.
