The tidal waves that devastated coastal regions in southern Asia on Sunday will deal a short-term blow to the region’s tourism industry but the overall economic impact will be relatively small, analysts say.
“If there was any bright spot in this disaster, it was that it did not destroy any major industrial and port facilities. Most of the areas affected were marginal ones in economic terms,” said Song Seng Wun, regional economist at G.K. Goh, the Singapore securities firm.
