TV networks balance being first with fear of making a bad call

Obama and McCain banners will chase each other up the Rockefeller Center tonight as NBC News uses its towering New York headquarters to track the results. Below, a map projected on to an ice rink will turn red or blue as the night wears on.

ABC News has moved to a studio overlooking Times Square, where Fox News and MSNBC screens will compete, while CNN will beam holograms of correspondents into its studio.
