Mobility diary: Symbian move ‘to bring choice’

How important is open source to enterprise mobility? In June, it received its biggest boost so far when Nokia, the handset giant, announced it would buy Symbian, its mobile platform joint-venture, and make its millions of lines of code for the smartphone operating system royalty-free and open for all to use and develop.

Symbian today dominates among smartphone platforms, running on 60 per cent of them, according to researchers Canalys.
