Oil and gas: Sunken treasure is ticket to the world’s VIP energy club

Few investment opportunities in recent years have attracted as much international attention as the discovery in 2007 of potentially enormous deposits of oil and gas off Brazil’s coast.

Known as the “pre-salt” fields because they are trapped up to 7,000 metres under the sea beneath a thick, hard-to-penetrate layer of salt, the finds promise to transform Brazil into a significant oil exporting nation.
