Peter Mandelson, UK business secretary, warned on Friday that the government had to have a credible medium-term plan for improving the public finances or else the government would be unable to help the economy through the recession.
Speaking to British business leaders on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos, his words came a few hours after Gordon Brown insisted Britain’s public finances were among the strongest of advanced economies.
