Support for president-elect Barack Obama among the Afghan politicians and senior officials who attended the US embassy’s election party in Kabul on Wednesday morning was unequivocal.

The president-elect won by a landslide in an unofficial poll carried out at the event, held in a five-star hotel in the city centre that was overrun by Taliban fighters last January.
