Israel has launched the biggest emergency drill in its history to ready the population for a potential bombardment and a war with its foes in the region, even as the government plays down the short-term risk of conflict.
The government insisted that the week-long exercise had no political significance, and should not be interpreted by Israel’s neighbours as a threat. However, the exercise comes amid rising tensions on the country’s northern border with Lebanon and Syria, and mounting speculation in the Arab world over the likelihood of military confrontation.
