In the developers' rueful recollection, the process of winning planning approval for The Shard, a 28-storey tower at London Bridge, was like "an Olympic bid".

As Kate Barker's review of the planning process called yesterday for a quicker and simpler planning system, the capital's tallest building might serve as a cautionary illustration of the complexity of the existing approval procedure for big developments.
