General Raymond Odierno assumed command of US forces in Iraq on Tuesday as their presence began to decrease with Iraqi authorities taking greater control.

He replaces Gen David Petraeus, who presided over last year’s troop surge, which is credited with helping cut violence. Gen Odierno has served two tours in Iraq, recently as second-in-command to Gen Petraeus.
