Austria faces vote as coalition splits

Austria faces elections in September after the conservative People’s party quit the 18-month-old grand coalition government saying it could no longer work with Alfred Gusenbauer, the Social Democratic chancellor.

The move followed the inability of both sides at the weekend to agree controversial health reforms. It also comes after months of strained relations and periodic crises within the coalition that escalated recently following disputes over European policy and a leadership crisis within the Social Democratic party.
